Isaac Hers Style: Meet Whitney

Can you say old school glamour?  That is what I see in Whitney’s Style photos.  We met Whitney here at the new shop, she loved the store and we LOVED the way she carried herself.  There was an instant connection.  Confident, eclectic, smart, Whitney is exactly the kind of gal we want to get chummy with.    Needless to say, we are thrilled to have her as part of the Isaac Hers community and absolutely love it every time she stops in.

Age: 23
Occupation: Make-up artist for Stila Cosmetics & Cocktail server at Urban Farmer Restaurant.
Hometown: Portland Oregon

What are your go-‐to accessories? A pair of big earings, or an offensive amount of rings. Most are hand me downs from my Grandma’s amazing accessories collection.

Photo: Lavenda Memory, Hair/Makeup: Prima Salon

What splurge are you saving for right now? I am saving for collection pieces, I am working on evolving and expanding my vintage collection. I would love to find a pen necklace, or a box clutch.

Has anyone in your life influenced your personal style? I have a very large family, so I have pulled from all of the women that I have been surrounded by my entire life. I would have to say that my Grandma is my biggest style influence, she dressed in a time when looking put together, no matter your social status, was very important. I try and take her classic prestine asthetic and add a bit of my own edge.

What 3 things from your wardrobe do you wear most often? Staple pieces are things I always think im lacking, I’m sure there are pieces I wear more then others. Being that I work in places where jeans are not part of the dress code means I wear an inconcievable amount of black. I have a dark grey over-sized blazer that I can throw over anything be it a cocktail dress or a floral print bouse. Also my prized high waisted black skinny slacks. Definitely would be a bit lost without those.

What is your most prized possession? Oh goodness. I would have to say, my mothers wedding dress, which was worn by my Grandma as well. I plan on having it altered and wearing it one day myself.

What attracts you to Isaac Hers? I obviously favor the aesthetics of another time, other then my own. Isaac Hers helps me stay contemporary, mixing my classic vintage pieces with the clean lines, often architectual, looks of the Isaac Hers pieces.

What are you wearing ?  I am wearing the Isaac Hers La Pine Dress and Jeffrey Campbell Lita shoes from Solestruck.  My rings and earrings are from Magnolia designs.  She is one of my closest friends and is a jewelry designer in LA.

Molly Jane Quinn joins Isaac Hers Team!

Photo: Lisa Warninger

After an awesome 2011, I decided the next thing we really need as a business is a upgraded/updated online store and a big PR push to go with it.  So, I cast the net using social media and my real life social network and got some really great candidates.  I was shocked, however, when I read Molly’s CV.   On the most basic level, it was clear she had experience developing and maintaining a web store for a small boutique on Cape Cod, but she is also an accomplished writer/author.  Having a degree in Journalism from University of Massachusetts in Amherst, she quickly became the associate editor for Design New England.  But you Portlander’s will probably know her best for her blog, Unhappy Hipsters and her book, It’s Lonely in the Modern World.  As you might expect, I nearly fell off my chair that someone so accomplished wanted to help us with our online store.  I met Molly, she was so real and down to earth and CLEARLY qualified, having experience in every required area.  Needless to say, I did what any sane person would do, I hired her!!  She started last week and I can tell already that, while she is still acclimating to Portland, she is a terrific and welcome fit at Isaac Hers.  I know I am in good hands.  With her talents, her contributions will by many!  Stop in and say hi!

Isaac Hers Style: Meet Marjorie

I remember, when I first opened Phlox 5 1/2 years ago, Marjorie was the FIRST person from the press to contact me.  I think we were both sorta new to our respective jobs.  In case you don’t know, Marjorie Skinner is the Managing Editor and Style Columnist for the Portland Mercury.   When we first met, she was very polite, a little reserved (journalistic integrity) and excited about fashion.  I liked her instantly for her enthused yet cautious nature.

Photo: Lavenda Memory, Hair/Makeup: Prima Salon

As for me, I was a tiny bit nervous about the press, as they could write whatever they want. I, of course, wanted to make a good impression.  Luckily, it all turned out just fine and five years later, we have both grown in our respective professions, share a mutual respect and are still excited to be working in Portland’s small but blossoming fashion industry.  If you haven’t already, check out Marjorie’s column, Sold Out, and blog, MOD (Mercury on Design).  Her dedication to Portland’s designers and boutiques has helped elevate the whole industry.  Thank you Marjorie!

Hometown: I grew up on the San Francisco peninsula, in a tiny beach town called Moss Beach, but went to school and basically lived my life in the city. Town and country, y’all.

What are  your  go‐to accessories?  Persol sunglasses. I’m a freak about sun protection. I wear them in the rain.

What splurge are you saving for right now? I loved the dyed canvas bags that Carly Mick and Susannah Hohmann showed at Content, but I’m having them make me a custom one that’s larger, more of a weekender instead of overnight sized. Their price point is really reasonable though, so I don’t know if that qualifies as a splurge. The list of items I want Adam Arnold to make me from his Fall collection definitely will be, though.

Has anyone in your life influenced your personal style? It’s hard to think of one individual, but the older dancers at my ballet school growing up were a big influence, as were the limitations of school uniforms and a high school dress code. I tend to pick and choose rather than subscribe to any one person as an icon.

What 3 things from your wardrobe do you wear most often? Since the weather’s turned so cold, I’ve been wearing the hell out of this crazy Frocky Jack Morgan coat I found at the Portland Design Collective. It’s textured velvet with giant sweater sleeves and (vintage! repurposed!) mink trim, with a panel of haphazard beading down one side that’s kind of melting. I also depend a lot on that one plain versatile black miniskirt that constantly needs replacing, ditto that my skinny black J-Brand jeans.

Photo: Lavenda Memory, Hair/Makeup: Prima Salon

What is your most prized possession? A diamond pendant that belonged to my grandmother and hangs on a gold chain that was a gift from my fiancé. That and these awesome studded lace-up boots by Calleen Cordero, which are my favorite shoes I’ve ever owned, and that is saying a lot.

What attracts you to Isaac Hers? Flattering cuts, particularly in the dresses, and the fact that they have a personality on their own but invite you to use them as a canvas.

What are you wearing? I was wearing  the Isaac Hers Broken top coat, a top by Velvet, skirt from Pendleton’s The Portland Collection, and black tights. My fiance bought the Pendleton skirt for me at the friends and family sample sale this past fall. I was really glad to have been able to score something from that collection. Not only do I feel a connection to it because I know the designers, but it wove its way into my professional life quite a bit—not just as a journalist covering Portland fashion, but I was also able to help produce the Portland premiere runway show in September, and make my first appearance on OPB’s Think Out Loud radio show to talk about it.  The bag was actually made for me by my fiance Jesse Champlin ( rushaccessories.com). He got the idea while he was making himself a motorcycle seat, did some research on Chanel bags, and bam—happy birthday to me. It’s a one of a kind piece, and even though I’ve used it loads over the past two and a half years I’ve had it, but there’s hardly a blemish on it.

To get Marjorie’s style stop in and try on the Isaac Hers Brokentop coat!  They are on sale now, only a few left!

Isaac Hers Style: Meet Palma

It is almost Christmas and it is perfect timing for Palma’s style blog.  Her whole look screams holiday festivities!  We met Palma this summer shortly after we opened our doors.  She came in and loved the shop (looking great in everything is a bonus for her).  The day she bought the Warm Spring dress (below), we asked her to participate in our Isaac Hers Style shoot.  I am really happy we did, because she is a lovely woman with a unique and interesting sense of style.

What are your go-to accessories? I often wear a simple leather belt sash and layers of clothing to create different looks, clothing recipes-if you will.  I love my hair stick to put up my hair and my Tuarag silver earrings.

What splurge are you saving for right now? Travel

Has anyone in your life influenced you personal style? My mother always taught me about quality and creativity.  I am influenced greatly by works cultures and my travels.

What 3 things from your wardrobe do you wear most often? My Cydwoq tall boots, over-the-knee socks, and my felt and silk jacket.

Photo: Lavenda Memory, Hair/Makeup: Prima Salon

What is your most prized possession? Anything comfortable, versatile yet fashionable, and with good pockets!  I love pieces that can be styled different ways.

What attracts you to Isaac Hers? I love to support local businesses and local artists.  I also appreciate unique, well-designed creations.

What are you wearing? I am wearing the Isaac Hers Warm Springs dress paired with some of my favorite things.  My shoes are cydwoq- my favorite brand of shoe made in USA just outside of LA- all veg tanned leathers, natural finishing touches in wood, bone, etc. and non toxic glues, etc.  The hat is handmade from Black Mountain Weavers in Pt. Reyes, CA.  My shell ring is one of those beloved adornments I picked up at a music festival- what is so cool is that it is a completely intact shell with no alteration except the hole for my finger- so you can take it off and look inside and see the spiral- one of my favorite forms of natural genius. Design based on intelligence in nature is important to me personally and professionally. I work with people who specialize in a field called “Biomimicry” that helps all types of professionals understand how to optimize design by taking nature’s cues.

To get Palma’s look try the Warm Springs dress.  Comes in camel and green.
