I met this designer at a trade show in in New York. Her work drew me in. The line is called Bijules, the designer is Jules Kim. Her work is bold and a little daring. It combines femininity with a visceral toughness. There is an inherent bling in some of her work that isn’t for the average Portlander, but nonetheless, I am always impressed by designers that are leading and thinking a little differently about boundaries of art and fashion. She isn’t letting a particular market define what she makes, she is making jewelry to be worn in unusual ways. Here are some of her pieces that I did not buy, yet.
On the left is a nail ring. I love the concept, but also I was impressed with the construction and how easily and firmly it stayed on the finger tip. This is actually one of the pieces that gets a lot press and that is seen the most in editorial spreads. It might be a bit adventurous for Portlanders, but still awesome.
On the right is the bony knuckle ring. You wear this over the large knuckle of your finger. The design is subtle, sophisticated, a little tough and still allows full movement of your finger. Also, it stays put. This one I almost purchased for myself and still might. If you need one of these now, you can buy at Kim’s Webstore. Let me know what you think of these bolder pieces and I can expand the offering at Isaac Hers.
Not only did I love her work, I connected with her as a designer. I found I could speak to her about how ideas and visions come to me in dreams, almost seeming divine or mystical inspiration. She instantly understood, which felt good. Sometimes, this kind of divulgence can give the appearance that you are a little “crazy” or too “new-agey.” Crazy I might be (a little), but new-agey, I am not. Anyway, I instantly liked her.
Kim’s work is often featured in the most prestigious fashion editorial spreads. Italian Vogue (above) and W Magazine (below) are just a few examples.
Being impressed, I actually did buy a few things for the store. Here they are.

These bar rings are just awesome. Having only one finger hole, they are so much more comfortable than the two-finger bar rings. They are a little pricey, but they are solid sterling silver, beautiful!
If you are looking for something that is a little more affordable, check out these playful plastic bar rings.
We, at the store, played around with how we would wear these.
Available in several colors, you can mix and match, stack and stagger. So much fun! At only $12 each, these are an easy adder to your summer look.
Come try them for yourself. LOVE!!
